Graduate: Engaged, Mastering, Succeeding (GEMS)
Durham Regional Hospital, a member of the Duke Medicine system, is pleased to offer a unique program designed specifically to provide the extra support and education needed for new nursing graduates.
The GEMS program is an information-packed, hands-on internship program for the new nurse that is paid and preceptor guided.

Choosing a Specialty
GEMS participants will select one of the following three tracks, and will rotate between all areas of their chosen track:
Adult Health (Medical and Surgical) - rotations include: Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedic/Neurology, Oncology Medicine and the Durham Rehab Institute.
Critical Care - rotations include our Emergency Department, Critical Care and Telemetry Units.
Women's Services - rotations include: Nurseries, labor and delivery, and the postpartum/GYN Units.
After rotating through all areas of their chosen track, participants will select an area of best fit as a "home base".
Program Benefits
In addition to strong preceptor support, GEMS participants will enjoy:
- Educational sessions with guest speakers
- The chance to give and receive support from fellow new nurses enrolled in the GEMS program
- A shift differential if working evenings, nights or weekends
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for participation in the GEMS program, nurses must be:
- A new graduate RN with less than one year of experience
- Licensed in the state of North Carolina prior to orientation
